I passed by an interesting article last week, that states 91% of British women wouldn’t go on an evening out with their make up on. 64% wouldn’t go to work without it and 33% wouldn’t go out of the house without it and 44% wouldn’t allow a makeupless face be tweeted! I’m told that Holly Whatsit from This Morning did just that – here So where do we all stand on this?
I have to say that I’m not a great makeup wearer. In my very misspent youth when goth was the way to go then a certain amount of heavy black eyeliner was worn (although not to the same extent many of my friends went to) these days I have to confess that 90% of my life is spent without makeup! Years of early shifts in the NHS made the thought of mirrors and concentration before work way too tricky and before that being home with the children seemed to mean a thin facial coating of Weetabix and finger paint rather than foundation and lippy!
So whats my excuse now then? Without little ones in the house I have the time to put on a face in the mornings, no 5,30am starts, etc. I do wear a face if I’m going somewhere posh and sometimes just because I feel like it, but I feel no compulsion to do it and I have no issue with going out ‘naked’ (face only of course!)
Is it because I’m so self assured I can hold my head up without it? So not the case at all, anyone who really knows me, knows that although I may have more front than Brighton, actually I’m crippled with self doubt a lot of the time.
Is it because I don’t want to be judged by the state of my skin and length of my eye lashes? Well a certain amount of it is that. I try hard not to judge others by their appearance, not always successfully I will admit. But I certainly don’t want anyone to judge me – for better or worse – because I do or don’t wear makeup or even what I wear – I don’t wear designer labelled clothes, I have never even looked in a Boden catalogue – and have no intention of ever doing so either! I don’t have a ‘labelled’ handbag and my best clothing buddies are George, Florence and Fred! What makeup I own I bought in the supermarket, and my skin routine consists of whatever is on offer when I go shopping!
I think ultimately though, it’s because I’m lazy! I just can’t be bothered to waste time on such pointless pastimes! I mean that time in the morning could be spent still sleeping, or drinking coffee and eating breakfast! The extra time in the evening taking the damn stuff off could be spent reading a good book or sleeping! And because I don’t wear it very often, I’m not very good at the speed makeup – it takes me forever to get it straight and right and even, not helped by being as blind as a bat without my specs on!
I am also conscious that children pick up on the habits and lifestyle choices of their parents and I have a daughter. I don’t want her to become obsessed with her image, she has natural youthful beauty and I want her to enjoy that without the need to plaster her face with anything! I see the girls she goes to school with, caked in foundation and with eyelashes so heavy they have to tip their heads back to get their eyes open, seriously girls – get over yourselves and get out more!
So here it is people – no make up, no expensive hair and lash extensions (don’t get me started on the advertising world and their lies about looking good with nothing more than their product, a professional make up artist, a full lighting rig, special camera lenses and a complex computer imaging suite to touch everything up) Just au naturelle mois!

No laughing now! Well at least only where I can’t hear you!!
Would you go without your makeup face??
