Well, the Christmas build up has started I guess! Shopping, presents, wrapping paper, excited children – the whole nine yards. We live, for the most part a very lucky life, and yes I know we are all struggling to make ends meet at times – but – there are a great many others far worse off than we are! So I have a plan – a reasonably cunning one too!
Now I must admit, that it is not entirely selfless, I stand to make a little money at it – after all I am trying to run a business! But, I’m hoping that it will encourage others to give at this time of excess.
I’m making some advent calendars which will comprise of a garland of handmade Christmas stockings, but I’m not going to put anything inside them!
My hope is that the children will be encouraged to put a coin into a stocking each day and create a fund for a charity. It can be the opportunity to start a discussion about giving and people worse off etc. I would hope that the children will be given the chance to choose their own charity, learn more about it and feel that they have personally made a difference! The other advantage being that it is re useable, so they can give year after year!
I think children are very receptive to the idea of giving, and we need to be sure to educate them as to how charity money is spent, who benefits, what are the long term aims etc etc. Maybe if we educate them from very small, we will breed a whole generation of children who give more generously!
I’d be really intrigued to know what you all think – would you buy it ? is it a good idea in general? Have I missed the ball?
