Oh my goodness, what a day and half ! We went out as a collective today. Me, Bernard and G’ma A to visit with the other side of the family (G’dad R) and went to just the most wonderful place!
As a dear friend referred to me at the beginning of the week, I am a total fabric nerd ! I could happily spend my day in fabric shops just looking, I have been known to spend a whole day in the costume hall at the V&A staring with my mouth open, and as you all know I have an unhealthily large fabric collection !
Well today we went to fabric nirvana – the Warner Textile Achive in Braintree. Oh Dear Lord – I want to move in !
Based in the once bustling mills of Warner & Sons in Silks Way. It houses the nations second largest collection of flat textiles and shows the history of the Warner family business from it’s roots with Benjamin, a scarlet dyer in Spitalfields in the late 18th century, through to it the days of weaving fabrics for Royal robes and design classics of the mid 20th century.
It really is the most beautiful place and I could happily return over and over again ! We were greeted by one of their lovely volunteers, Anne, who couldn’t have been more friendly She was happy to show us the best place to start and introduced us to the joys of the place ! Thank you Anne, you are a star and made the day even better ! Maybe most importantly, pointed us at the quilt raffle and with an opportunity to win a beautiful piece of fabric art, who can say no !
For those of you who love all things fabric, as we do – it’s well worth a visit, and if you can find a group of 10, then you can have a special visit, with lunch and a trip round the ‘inner sanctum’ where the public never normally get to go ! Watch this space – I will be begging for people to make up the numbers so we can go do this!
In the short term however, we’ll be going to their Textile Fair in May – maybe we’ll see some of you there!
It has certainly inspired me to hunt in the fabric cupboard and make something beautiful.
