As I watch you walk away from me to the departure gate there are so many emotions racing through me – pride, fear, joy and sadness – I don’t quite know what to think first!
Sad that we won’t see you this summer, sad that there will be no tea picnics on the beach or long leisurely drives for a day out.
Joy because you will experience the most wonderful things over the summer. Mountains, and beautiful views across the glacier, maybe polar bears – but only at a distance please!
Fear for your safety and well-being. Will you be safe so far from home, if you’re hurt can I get to you? although I guess you don’t need mum butting in!!
But mostly pride! Just blown away with pride. Chest swelling, eye watering, thunder claps of maternal pride, that my beautiful boy, that little bundle who had such a tough start and so nearly didn’t make it, is off on an enormous adventure!
Pride that as you stride across the world with humour, with passion for the countryside around you, with a sense of justice as big as your heart and with your beautiful Irish baby by your side, it lifts my feet off the floor with a swelling sense of achievement!
My boy you are the greatest son I could have asked for!
So come home safely my darling boy, full of stories or far flung places, with a camera full of pictures to show us and an experience to share with us all!
