I read an article last week about Ask.fm.
There have been several claims of self harming and suicide in vulnerable young people as a result of the bullying on this web site. (I’m saying “claims” not to dismiss anything that has happened to anyone, but because to accuse someone of causing that type of injury is a very serious and litigious statement to make)
The parent demanding this web site be shut down because of the hurt caused to her daughter (aged 13) by anonymous users. This is a truly dreadful thing to have happened and I have every sympathy for the girl – those of you who know me will tell you how I feel about bullying! (And I do agree that this site is unpleasant at best and probably close down)
Surely it is the responsibility of you, her parent, to protect her!
Why didn’t you know she was using it? (which according to the article she didn’t!) She is 13 for crying out loud!
Do you not remember being a young teenager? racked with uncertainty, unsure and insecure?
Why allow your daughter to experience all of that with the morons who haunt web sites like this?
Your are the role model for her life and the gauge to control the excesses and influences on her young and vulnerable mind!
It is your job to keep her safe, protected and guide her through the pitfalls of life, in which ever way suits you best.
And before you ask – yes I do know which web sites my daughter uses! And I know what her passwords are and can check her safety whenever I feel I need to – and she’s 17 – and in the spirit of trust she knows mine as well.
I don’t check, but if I needed to or was concerned about her I could!
She uses the family computers and doesn’t lock herself away in a different room alone with the weirdos and bullies that stalk the web!
Step up to the plate people and be responsible for your kids!
