I have been in thoughtful reflective mode for a few days now. The birth of a new generation in the family has made me consider those that have gone before.
I joined a family web search site some years ago in an attempt to trace my family tree. I have found some truly amazing things, confirmed some family stories, blew apart some family myths and regretted not doing it years ago, so my mum could see what I had found!
Like everyone’s families I come from a diverse background. But does that colour who I am today? Does it make me the person I am now?
It takes a village to raise a child, so someone profound once said, and in a way I guess an extended family is rather like a village. I was raised by mum and dad, but also in turn older siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles raised me too.My children have been raised (some would say dragged up) by a similar family group, so our ‘village’ has been our family.
So who am I? I’m a part Irish, part Londoner, descended from Duncan first King of Scotland, who has brewing, farming, printing, tailoring, saddlery, railway, engineering, and architectural blood running in my veins!
Who do you think you are??
