I remember the day Gruffalo was born!
She has built her nest under Bernard’s bed as she had before and torn up enough paper and stolen enough socks to sink the Titanic.
She meowed her way through, desperate that one of us would stay with her until the 3 little bundles were delivered. 2 ginger toms and a multicoloured girl, all teeny tiny and perfect! Always so lovely that she wanted us with her.
He fell in love the day he opened his eyes – and imprinted to her at once! Everywhere Bernard went – he went too! Sat on her lap, on her face if she laid down, in the hood of her jumper if he could get close enough and even sat on the edge of the bath while she was soaking away her troubles!
He “helped” her with home work and was always the first one to taste a cake when it came out of the oven – usually before you could get it out of the tin!
But sadly this morning we had to go for one last trip to the vet. His fight to get better was over and the kindest thing to do was help him pass in peace. I’ve done a lot of tough and shitty things as a grown up – but this has to be close to the top of the list!
Laid in my arms he relaxed and took a final breath and I felt like a total bitch!
Who the hell am I to make a life and death decision over another living creature!
I know it was the right decision, and I know that he is no longer suffering and yes I know (to those of you now raising eyebrows and scoffing ) that he was only a cat – but he was our cat! And we loved him!
He was friendly and kind hearted to the little ones who visited. He was best of friends with our canine chum Nano when he came to stay.
Always please to see you and waiting by the door to say hello!
So rest easy little buddy, lets hope there are lots of fresh baked cakes to munch on and butterflies to chase where ever you are now!
