Given that I was bought up by a camera buff, and was surrounded by camera and developing equipment most of my childhood, you’d think I would know how to use a camera properly!
Well I figured as soon as there was an automatic setting I wouldn’t have to learn so I didn’t! And anyway making decisions on shutter speed and aperture setting just sounded too scary.
So automatic setting ruled the day and I got some pretty good results really, but there was always a little part of my brain that new I could do better and one day I would have to learn it all!
When Jessops Academy invited me to a workshop session in their Oxford Street branch I jumped at the chance – this could be the day I learned what all those dials and buttons were really for!!
And to those of you too scared to take the camera of auto settings, or who want to hone your skill with a telephoto lens – this is quite possible the best way to do it!
The very lovely team there managed to explain and demonstrate how to use all those things that were a foreign language to me!
I mean I really did get it, and trust me people have tried before and I never quite got there. This time I was off, setting shutter speed to catch action shots,
to pick my light in that “golden hour”
I can now focus the background in a shot
or blur it and focus more on the subject
Now I know that to a lot of you this is very simple stuff, far beyond where you all are, but as a total beginner who had no idea this is a huge leap forward! I can tell you all now about the triangle of light, the rule of thirds and all those things you’ve been talking about over my head for years!
And if you are beyond these first steps, well there is a course for you too, motor sports, wildlife, weddings, portrait, studio and product shots are all covered by the wide range of courses they offer in a variety of locations around the country
So please – do yourself and your camera a favour and go visits Jessops and learn something new! And to encourage you to give it a go, they very lovely peeps there have given me a code to share with you all. It will give you £40 off a level 1 or level 2 course* with them, so sign up and go see the very lovely Ian, James, Owen & Vicky and let them share their passion for pictures with you!
