A lovely (if chilly) day out and victorian cooking

February 23, 2013

To celebrate the end of the half term, and Hubby and Bernards impending return to school/college, we decided to have a grand day out with my darling dad.

So with lots of warm layers, and woolly hats we set of for Audley End  the scene of many happy childhood days out.

i had no idea just how many bits of the pig people will eat! And as part of the the ”Everything but the squeak’  programme the kitchens were in full swing preparing a huge array of pork based cooking – from noses and ears to toes and tummies!

And as a keen hisotrical cooking nut, the most impressive thing was the spit roast – which uses nothing more than the heat from the fire to turn a turbine and series of cogs which in turn – turns the spit! I have got to get me one of these !!

The staff were grand and the free liqueur samples in the shop just what was needed for such a cold day! I’m looking forward to going again later in the year when the house is open too!

My only criticism is there was no suitable catering for Mr Keynko  in the tea shop (gluten free diet) We would happily stayed for lunch there, had there been anything he could eat!

Mind you if we had stayed there we would never have stumbled across the wonderful White Hart  at Wimbish. A truly excellent lunch, wonderful service a very cute doggy to make a fuss of and awesome custard! If you’re ever out that way – seriously worth a visit!
